Nobu: A Memoir.

Nobu is a short memoir by acclaimed Chef and restaurateur Nobu Matsuhisa. Opening with a brief account of his childhood and his apprenticeship in a sushi bar in his home town, it goes on to tell how he started his own restaurants first in Peru and then America. Following on from this he talks about the origins of some of his signature recipes, his concepts of hospitality and how his own personal values and a belief in striving for excellence has helped shape the business empire he helms today.

This was a brief, accessible book and there were many parts of it that I found fascinating (his tales of being an apprentice and his visions as a hotelier for instance). It was written in an easy to read manner and although it is a memoir I feel that it would be a valuable read to anyone who dreams of running their own restaurant, or indeed, any other type of business.  Matsuhisa-San comes across as being a modest and kind man and I enjoyed this look into his life and achievements.
It may not be the perfect read for everyone, but I recommend it to anyone who is involved with the world of hospitality in any way and for fans of his restaurants.

Reading this memoir also gives you the perfect excuse to visit a Nobu restaurant! (I've been and it is a memorable experience both in terms of the food and service).
