When Betty's beloved Grandmother, Arlette, dies her will contains a mysterious benificery called Clara Pickles. With her small inheritance Betty moves to Soho, London and sets out on a quest to find Clara.
Before I Met You is written in Lisa Jewell's usual engaging style. The story alternates between Betty's life in 1990's London and Arlette's life there in the 1920's. It is an entertaining easy read.
Betty is a lovable character and although her story is pretty cliched I did enjoy it. It is set in the pre internet world so researching her Grandmother's story and finding the beneficiary involves somewhat more leg work than it would today.
Arlette's character feels a little less accessible and the parts of the book telling her story are slightly more complex and involved. Although I didn't bond as much with Arlette's character the mystery surrounding her and Clara kept me guessing.
Before I Met You is a light read but one that I found to be very absorbing.
