American Housewife is a collection of 12 unconnected short stories. The emphasis here really is on short as not only is the book itself in a smaller format than is usual the shortest story is less than a page long. It's a quick read but one that took me some time to get through as I didn't enjoy this book at all.
Although I was initially intrigued by the dark undercurrent present in the stories I just couldn't work out what the author was trying to do here. Were the stories supposed to be humorous or were they supposed to shock? The author has a good writing style but the stories themselves felt like a series of assignments from a writing class strung together.
I've seen quite a few reviews for this book and it seems to have been promoted in local bookstores quite heavily, which is what led me to pick it up. I should rely on my usual method for selecting books by writers who are unknown to me, which is, don't read it unless one of the cover reviews is by a national paper or a published author I have heard of.
There was something that seemed immature about this collection and the book was a big disappointment to me. The cover image led me to believe that it would be a quirky unusual read but in all honesty I only finished reading it as it was such a slim volume...
