Empties July 2019.

In July I managed to use up twenty-four samples and fifteen full-sized products.

Skincare.

I only managed to finish three full-size skincare items in July

I used my last bottle of the old formula of Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip which has been a staple for me for many years. It was great as a morning face wash. I loved its earthy scent and how cooling and refreshing it felt. It was particularly good for greasier skins, and it left my skin balanced and clean without being stripping. I don't dislike the new formula which is meant for all skin types but it is less liquid and clay-like with more of a gel type consistency that I don't find as refreshing. I'm happy to use the new version but don't see myself purchasing it sadly.

Ark Skin Perfector De-Stress Serum reminds me of Caudalie VinoPerfect Serum. It is a nice lightweight, wet-feeling, fresh-smelling serum. It feels very hydrating and was great to use after masks and treatments for calming my skin. The dropper system worked well but I did need to shake it before use as it tended to split (this was mentioned on the packaging, I didn't get a dodgy bottle!). It is a little pricy and I probably wouldn't buy it as I'm not sure how easy it is to get in the US but I did enjoy it immensely and found it a useful product to have in stock.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunscreen SPF70 is inexpensive and it works! Comfortable, no white cast, layers well with other products and it doesn't make my face look shiny. I have bought this many times previously and will do so again. I also like that the bottle isn't huge so it is easy to carry around and I don't have to worry about it going off. 

I used fourteen skincare samples, four of which were cleansers.

Drunk Elephant Slaai Cleansing Balm is great, it whisks everything away and rinses away cleanly leaving no residue. I like this balm a lot and it reminds me of Clinique TTDO Balm. However, I do like an aromatic balm so I'm not sure if I would purchase a full size of this simply because it is unscented - I realise this is a positive selling point for many people but it isn't for me I'm afraid.

 I finished a deluxe sample of the new Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip. It was good to try this and the old one side by side, but as I said I probably wouldn't buy this version although I am happy to use samples.

Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel is an old favourite, a lovely gentle pink gel that smells like Turkish Delight. It is gentle, non-foaming, non-drying and effective. I would use this as a first or second cleanse but I mostly use it as a morning face wash. I have bought this many times and will continue to do so.

Drunk Elephant B-Hydra isn't an exceptional HA serum but it is a very nice one that I would definitely purchase in full size. I always enjoy this. It leaves my skin looking plump and hydrated and it works very well with other products.

Revivé Anti Ageing Eye Serum is very light and runny. It lasts for ages but I don't feel that it does much beyond hydrating my eye area. I expect more from an item at this price point.

Rodial Bee Venom Moisturiser is another spendy item. I finished two different-sized samples of this thick moisturising cream. It has a scent that reminds me of honey and it absorbs well and feels moisturising, It does prickle a bit on application which makes it feel a tad gimmicky, to be honest
 it is a little underwhelming for me considering its price.

Dr Dennis Gross AB Exfoliating Moisturiser is very light, almost lotion-like in consistency. I used it at night as it contains acids and while I didn't dislike this cream I didn't really form an opinion of it as I only used it for a few nights.

Drunk Elephant Prontini is a moisturiser with a light almost gel-like texture. I used this over serums during the day and mixed it with a little oil at night. It made my skin feel incredibly soft and balanced my skin not leaving it greasy at all. I don't often rave about a moisturiser but I think that this is exceptionally good and it suits my skin very well, I also found that I needed to use very little of this for it to be effective. I would definitely get a full size of this if I ever need to purchase a moisturiser (unlikely) and much prefer it to Drunk Elephant LaLa.

Dr Haushka Lip Care Stick is a solid lip balm in the manner of chapstick. It is made from castor and other oils and leaves lips with a little sheen. Its quite soft and I used this up fairly quickly. I felt like this was one of those balms that sit on top of the lips without really doing much and I needed to apply it fairly frequently. It's not something that I would purchase again.

 I used two samples of Natura Bisse Diamond Cocoon Pollution Protection Spray. It is a water weight spray that you apply over sunscreen or makeup before going out. It protects skin from pollution and also blue light. It felt nice and refreshing and sat well over my makeup but I'm not sure how effective it is given that it only deposits a fine mist on the skin.

Finally, Peter Thomas Roth Camu Camu Power C Sleeping Mask is a declutter. I actually thought this had oxidised when I used it but after reading many reviews online it doesn't appear to have. It is orange in colour and has an odd strong fragrance (I thought it smelled like a sweet dessert wine) that lingered on the skin. This gel-like cream seemed to sit on my skin whenever I applied a generous layer of it and when I tried to rub this in it tended to pill. Also because of its colour, I wasn't inclined to sleep in this on my white sheets. The only good thing I have to say is that the pump packaging was very efficient otherwise, it was a total bust!

Haircare.

I enjoyed Windle & Moodie Nourishing Treatment Shampoo with Rooibos and Argan Oil. The pump worked well as this was quite a thin shampoo. It lathered and rinsed well and left my hair feeling good. I actually preferred this to the matching conditioner and this bottle lasted me for a long time. I think I would repurchase this although I wouldn't rush out to get the conditioner from this range again.

I'm continuing to use up my stash of hair masks by repurposing them as conditioners. I used up three mini Briogeo Don't Despair Repair Masks in this way. It is a rich, thick, slightly oily feeling mask with a light berry scent. It did leave my hair feeling soft and feeling somewhat thicker but it also left my bath scummy with oil which was annoying.

I'm trying to transition to better (ie more expensive ) hair care but one drugstore item that I can't see myself giving up is L'oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil! I love this inexpensive leave-in hair serum/oil. It smells like Argan Oil, smoothes and detangles, keeps frizz away and leaves my hair feeling soft without ever weighing it down or making it appear stringy.

I used Oribe FeatherBalm Weightless Styler as a leave-in conditioner too. It smells divine as you would expect from Oribe and whilst it did detangle my hair and make it more manageable I found it difficult to know how much to use. If you have very very fine hair this may be good for you, otherwise, I would stick with Supershine because you just end up using too much of this version.
Living Proof Restore was a water weight leave-in conditioning spray. It worked well and didn't weigh my hair down, I liked this and was impressed that the pump on this sample was so efficient.

Sexy Hair Love Oil did work pretty well as a leave-in conditioner but it was very silicon like in feel and left a lot of build-up in my hair. I also hated the cringe-worthy name.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Glossing Mist is a declutter. I have had this finishing treatment sat on my shelf for so long. Every so often I will take it down and realise that the reason it is still on my shelf is that it makes my hair look oily when I use it.

Bodycare.

I finished six full-sized body products: two hand creams, two shower gels and two body lotions.

St Ives Purifying Sea Salt & Pacific Kelp Body Wash was surprisingly good considering how cheap it was (I think I paid 99cents for this as I found it on special offer and had a coupon!). This was a creamy body wash so it didn't make tons of lather but it was frothy enough. It had a fresh minerally sea scent and big chunks of sea salt for a natural exfoliation. I enjoyed this more than I expected to.

I didn't enjoy Olay Cleansing Infusion Body Wash, however. It was another creamy wash but it made my skin feel a little itchy after use and had silica for exfoliating. I bought this because I love the smell of ginger but it wasn't as gingery and zingy as I would have liked. Also, the silica scrubby bits stuck to my shower which was very messy.

I love Nivea Original Daily Moisture Body Lotion. It smells like classic Nivea and is very moisturising but it is one of the heavier lotions that Nivea make and is a bit too heavy for warm weather. Nothing wrong with this at all but it is much better suited to winter use.

What is great as a summertime body moisturiser is Bliss Grapefruit and Aloe Body Butter! While it is thick I wouldn't call it a body butter as it feels light in texture and the Aloe makes it more of a gel-cream. This literally melts into the skin and feels very soothing and hydrating. It has a subtle grapefruit scent that isn't too sharp and the Aloe lends it a cooling effect. I'm going to get more of this and I'm a bit gutted that I have stuck with the Bliss Lemon & Sage Body Butter in the past as I much prefer this one.

I used two hand creams. Grove Bergamot & Orange hand cream was lightly scented and had a light fairly runny texture. I liked this subtle orange scent and it did an okay job of moisturising my hands without leaving them feeling greasy. I love having mini Crabtree & Evelyn hand creams to carry in my bag, the formula is one of my favourites and this Festive Fig scented one smelled sweet and raisin-like without being lingering or sickly.

Makeup and Perfume.

 I used a full-sized bottle of Diptyque Philosykos EDT which I think is the best fig perfume, it is the perfect blend of sweet fig with a spiky greenness and creamy base notes. I always wear this scent in summer and have a mini backup in stock already. I will definitely be buying another full-sized bottle very soon.

I used up four perfume samples. Kate Spade In Full Bloom is a generic mixed floral scent with strong rose top notes. I found it to be not outstanding in any way and honestly it wasn't all that nice.

Giorgio Armani Si Passione is a strong, long-lasting fruity floral. This smelled quite apricot-like on me, it was an old fashioned department store type of scent that I found overly sweet and cloying, definitely not one for me. Juicy Couture Oui is a sweet fruity floral. It is youthful and easy to wear. I preferred it to the two above scents but it is still one of my least favourite offerings from Juicy.

L'Etate d'Orange Libre Cologne is a great warm-weather fragrance. It is very uncomplicated compared to other perfumes from this house, opening with strong classic 4711 Cologne like notes and soon becoming very lemony. I wouldn't say this is my favourite sort of scent but its very refreshing to have a spritz of in hot weather and its very easy to wear.

Finally, I finished two makeup items.

 I love Chantecaille Faux Cils Mascara, it adds darkness length and thickens without ever clumping. It gives a very natural-looking enhanced lash but it is very expensive - more than I would pay for a mascara - so I'm happy that I frequently get samples of it.

Hourglass Ambient Primer in 'Luminous Light' is a declutter. I love Veil Primer from Hourglass but this one failed to impress and I've had it sitting around unloved and unused for too long. It did even out my base colour and add a highlight effect but I felt like it sat on top of my skin and didn't really bond with other products in the way that Veil does.

And that's all for my July empties. I'm hoping to use up a lot of things in August as I will have some purchases coming up soon as GWP season is upon us!

A Major Beauty Declutter!

I have been watching a number of decluttering videos on youtube lately. I find them along with empties videos to be interesting as well as relaxing. They also inspired me to have my own beauty clearout, I hate throwing away unused items (of any sort) but there is absolutely no point in hanging onto products that I don't like, need or won't use and make up that is the wrong colour or an unflattering shade for me. There are also a few things that I have had in my collection that although I have loved using them in the past have been overlooked and are well past their prime.

Altogether I managed to get rid of eighty-four products. Forty-two of these were old and went in the trash, seventeen had been lightly used and I passed them on to other people. I managed to donate twenty-five products that were either brand new or were acceptable for donations.

Let's take a look at the categories of products I decluttered.

Lip Products.

The majority of products that I decluttered were lip colours. There were some that were old and which I hadn't used for some time as I had other similar colours or newer formulas that I preferred. I donated unused glosses, lipsticks and liners/pencils that were lightly used and could be sharpened. Most of the lip products I got rid of were from GWP's and most of these were decluttered because I didn't like/suit the colour.

Eye Shadows and Liners.

I donated lightly used, sharpenable liners and also any barely used powder colours. Again these mostly came as part of a GWP. I threw out a Too Faced Natural Eye palette because I had used all of the colours in it that I liked (it was kind of old, as well!) and a very old ByTerry Ombre Blackstar (remember those?) which I bought when I first started reading beauty blogs and never really used. I also threw some eyeliner pencils away which were old and dried out.

Cheek/Face Colours.

There were a couple of unused powder blushes that I had with GWP's that I donated. The rest of the face products were old ones that were the wrong tone and I threw them away.

Skincare.

I always manage to repurpose skincare! Creams that I don't like I use on my body and cleansers I use as handwashes etc etc. There were only three things that I threw away - a very very old tube of Beauty Flash Balm which is a product I don't have a place for in my routine anymore, and a moisturising eye stick that I found uncomfortable to apply. I also had a few nose blackhead strips that I find far too harsh to use so I passed these on to people who enjoy them.

Tooth Products.

I had quite a few tooth whitening strips which I passed onto other people along with some sachets of tooth powder.

Haircare.

I'm not sure why I have held onto a can of hairspray with a broken nozzle for so long but I finally threw it out! I donated some hairstyling products that I got from beauty boxes that I knew  I wouldn't use along with products that were for curly hair. 

Miscellaneous.

I donated a few odd items including an unopened nail varnish, some nail wraps, a few vials of perfume, and some sachets of body oil.

Overall.

I'm so pleased with my clear out! I actually enjoy having things organised and streamlined, it is a very satisfying feeling.

It's difficult to know what to do with excess/old anything but I always try to donate whatever I can. Unfortunately, shelters will often only accept unused unopened products so call ahead to find out what your local one will accept.

Month of Foil 2017: Empties and Comments.

What's a 'Month of Foil? 

It's nothing complicated I simply concentrate on using up all the sample sachets of product I have accumulated in an effort to use up old product and declutter, I try to do it once a year.  

If I had multiple samples of the same product I used them up one after the other. Obviously with only one or two applications of product it's difficult to form a proper opinion of results (although I could pretty much tell with a couple of uses if I didn't like something) but if I had multiple sachets the cumulative use of them allowed me to be a better judge of them.

How did it go?

Well, if I say so myself, I had a rather successful month and I managed to use up a total of 132 foil sample sachets.

I was out the gate running with this project as I had plenty of samples to choose from and on the first day I opened a lot of sachets! I started ripping sachets open but soon found that some sachets are better made than others and after a few messy openings I learned to keep a pair of scissors to hand to avoid spills and waste. I did find that even with neatly clipped corners it was easy to squeeze out too much product and I certainly used more product than needed on quite a few occasions to use up what had oozed out or to finish a sachet if there wasn't enough product left for a second application.

On day one I was full of enthusiasm but when day two dawned I must say that I wasn't thrilled by the prospect of only using samples. Luckily I had a good selection to choose from and by the time I had had a rather luxe morning shower (Tata Harper face wash, Rahua shampoo and conditioner, Jo Malone body wash and body lotion and a spritz of Diptyque) I was back on track.  

After a week I was a little fed up of samples and took a night off and made a routine that incorporated all of my favourite skincare items. The next day I felt a bit guilty and was enthusiastically back on the sachets!

Two weeks into the project I was accustomed to using sachets. I had got into the routine of selecting different products each day and choosing what to use up next, although I'm not sure if that was because it was easier as I had less choice of products perhaps? I had by this time used up lots of odds and ends and had used up certain categories of product such as body lotions and cleansers so I was back to using full sized products for at least some of my routine.       

At the end of the month I was pleased to have put all those samples to good use. I had discovered a couple of new products to put on my shopping list and tried out a few things that I didn't like at no expense. A couple of times during the month I dipped into my usual products if I felt my skin needed special treatment/attention but overall my skin looked pretty good considering how many different products and combinations I had used on it - I did have a lot of samples though so I could still tailor my skincare needs.

The Products. 

Skincare.
I used sixty three samples of skin care over the month. Eleven of these were cleansers but I did use two sachets of Kiehl's Calendula Face Wash as body wash as I find it to be far too foamy and drying on my face. In addition I used a sample of exfoliator, SW Basics Exfoliant which was fairly gentle but frankly felt odd - I was rubbing a bunch of pantry ingredients on my face. I also opened two face wipes, although I didn't actually use the Olay Daily Facials as it stung as soon as I put it on my face.
I used seven sachets of eye cream. I loved Dior Prestige Concentrate Yeux but both Dermalogica Total Eye Care SPF 15 and DHC Eye Bright made my sensitive eyes smart.
I used fourteen sachets of serum. I enjoyed the four sachets of Kane NY Serum Savant that I used but it is very expensive. Chanel Hydra Beauty Serum and Dr Dennis Gross Ferulic and Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Overnight Serum were also very good and I would consider buying both of them.
I had many sachets of facial moisturiser so I picked the ones that I liked the best to use. In the end I used eighteen sachets of moisturiser and five sachets of face oil. The creams that I liked the best were Dr Sebagh Vital Cream, Kate Somerville Goat Milk, Kat Burki Vitamin C Intensive Face Cream, Sunday Riley Tidal, Bakel Oxyregen, and Belif The True Cream Moisturising Bomb.
Finally I used five sachets of masks and one sheet mask. I prefer a mask that applies directly to the face rather than a sheet mask, and the best masks I used were Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask and Fresh Rose Face Mask.

Haircare.
I used thirty nine sachets of hair care, seventeen were shampoos and twenty two were conditioners. I did intend to use a hair mask but didn't manage to get around to it... I loved using Rahua again, I had almost forgotten how good it is, and I also enjoyed the Oribe Gold Lust products. I must say though that I find it so annoying that shampoo and conditioner samples are both the same size ( with the exception of samples from Shea Moisture) as no matter how hard I try I always end up using more conditioner... 

Body Care.
I used twenty one sachets of body care products. Four of these were hand lotions and of these I found the Diptyque Hand Lotion and Mario Badescu Hydrating Hand Cream to be very good.
I used five sachets of shower gel and I really enjoyed the Jo Malone ones which were strongly fragranced and left my bathroom smelling wonderful. I would buy these rather than Jo Malone perfumes, they were that nice.
I used two sachets of body oil which I found them to be very messy in this format and ten sachets of body lotion. I had three sachets of Amlactin Restoring Body Lotion which was very rich and emollient but smelled so awful I could only use it on my lower body.

Make Up and Sun Screen.

I used nine sachets of make up. Four of these were primers. I found YSL Forever CC Primer to be very thick and uncomfortable and it left a very noticeable white cast on my face. DHC Velvet Skin Coat was a waxy silicon primer, I find these to react badly with my skin so I didn't even attempt to use it. Luckily I had a sachet of Hourglass Veil to restore my faith in primers!
 I also loved Too Faced Shadow Insurance, it was the best eye primer I have ever tried and I will certainly get this when I next need an eye primer.
I used two sachets of tinted sunscreen, neither of which I liked all that much and two sachets of foundation of which I found Chanel Ultrawear Flawless Foundation to be way too matte and dry looking but Dior Nude Air was very good, it was light and natural looking and lasted very well even in hot weather - I may have to splurge on this!

And that's it for foil samples for the moment. I still have a few in stock but I'm looking forward to using my 'normal' products. As ever I found this month to be a useful exercise that pointed me in the direction of both a few things to purchase and a few to avoid.

My Nail Polish Declutter.

Considering I rarely paint my own nails, over the years I have amassed a fair few bottles of nail polish. (In my defense most of them have come as part of a GWP or from beauty boxes.) However, considering how little I use them, it is silly to keep hanging onto them especially as I don't have a permanent spot to keep them. I have been meaning to declutter them for some time but didn't know where to start until I saw this simple method of streamlining online, which works for just about any make up product not only nail polishes:

Step one: sort them into like groups of colours.

 Step two: decide what to keep and what to throw from each group. 

Easy right? Let's go!

The Glitters:

Julep Heartleigh, Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat Tweedy, Deborah Lippman Pink Princess, Nails Inc Chelsea Square.

I did buy the Tweedy Fuzzy Coat and I did use it a fair amount as it was so easy to apply but I feel as if the days of differently textured nail polishes have come and gone and can't see myself using this again. The others all came from gift bags/boxes. I'm not sure that I will use Heartleigh but I will keep it as it is the newest and prettiest of the remaining polishes.

The Blues

Station Rock-a-guy Blues, Essie Mesmerized, Deborah Lippman Money Now, Sleep Later, Deborah Lippman Magic Man.

I didn't buy any of these they were all in bags/boxes. As I never wear shimmery polishes the two Deborah Lippman ones get decluttered instantly. I love dark blues but the Station polish isn't quite dark enough so I will get rid of it. I do like Essie Periwinkle for a springtime pedicure so I will keep it.

Purple and Green.

Station Happy Wine-y People, Deborah Lippman Virtual Insanity, Sally Hansen Jungle Gem, Covergirl After Dark.

All of these were from bags/ boxes. I don't like any of these and won't wear them so I'm keeping none from this group!

Grey-ish.

OPI Cement the Deal, OPI My Silk Tie, Rimmel Punk Rock, Deborah Lippman Hard Rock Life. 

The only one that I purchased myself is the Kate Moss Rimmel Punk Rock, I like the name, the shade and it's by Mossy so this one is a keeper. Of the others, Cement the Deal is not flattering for my skin tone and the other two are shimmery so they are all going.

Nudes and Browns.

Deborah Lippman Fashion, Dior Beige Too Much, Nails Inc Porchester Square, Deborah Lippman Physical Attraction.

Ah beige and nudes are my favourite shades for fingers! If ever I do do my own nails I will most likely paint my fingernails with Fashion so that's definitely a keeper. Beige Too Much was my go to polish many years ago. I bought numerous bottles of this when I was living in France (at a time when nail bars were non existent there) and although this is old (check the old school Dior packaging) and probably not usable I want to keep it for nostalgic reasons. 

Do you remember when Nails Inc were the polishes to have? Well I was firmly on the Porchester Square bandwagon, this mini is pretty much dried up so I will get rid of it along with another shimmery Deborah Lippman.

Light Pinks and Peaches.

Station Off the Record Pink, Rococo Flower Town, Nars Orgasm, Essie Cantaloupe, Clinique (not named).

Five polishes here all from bags/boxes. The ones by Station and Rococo are both similar colours but the Rococo one is a little warmer and I like the formula better so that stays while the Station goes. The other three are all similar peachy tones but the Nars is shimmery and the unnamed Clinique polish isn't a great formula so I won't keep either. I occasionally use Essie Cantaloupe on my fingers if I have a coral on my feet so I will keep that.

Pinks.

Deborah Lippman Delovely, Orly Coquette Cute, Deborah Lippman Sweet Dreams, Essie Forget Me Nots, Essie Bermuda Shorts, Leighton Denny PillowTalk.

These are all quite different pinks and all are from bags/boxes. I've never used either Delovely or Coquette and Sweet Dreams is very shimmery so I'm going to get rid of all of those. I will keep the three on the right - I'm particularly fond of Essie Bermuda Shorts as a toe nail colour in the summer.

Reds.

Station Front Row Flasher, Julep Lee, Rococo VIP, Rococo Make Love, Not War, Deborah Lippman My Funny Valentine, Deborah Lippman I Want Candy.

Another six all from bags/boxes! Front Row Flasher from Station is red with a lot of grey undertones, it's an odd shade, if I'm wearing red I want it to be vibrant rather than dull so I'm not keeping this one. I will also get rid of the two Deborah Lippman reds. Colour wise My Funny Valentine falls in the middle of two of the reds I want to keep and I want Candy has a transparent jelly type finish that is difficult to apply

I will keep Lee by Julep which leans a little on the pink/coral side as I think that it is a good shade of red for spring. I'm also keeping both of the reds I have by Rococo. I love their formula and they are both quite different, VIP is a bright cerise that I like as a winter red and Make Love, Not War a little orange-y, almost a tomato red which is nice for summer.

Vamps.

Chanel Vamp, Rococo Brocade, Deborah Lippman Brown Eyed Girl, Deborah Lippman Maneater.

I love a good vampy red black nail be it on short fingernails or toe nails, it is so versatile and always looks good no matter what your skin tone or what season it is. It's a bit of a modern classic isn't it?

I bought the Chanel Vamp and I'm going to be keeping it, although at some point soon I should probably replace it with a bottle of the newer, harder wearing formula. The other three bottles all came from bags/ boxes. I will keep Rococo Brocade, it looks very similar to Vamp in the photo but actually is quite a bit darker and browner in tone. I will discard the two Deborah Lippman colours as they are both shimmery.

The Final Cut.

And here's what I have left! 

I threw away twenty six bottles which left me with a collection of fifteen nail varnishes all of which are shades that I like and find flattering. I think that I have a pretty good range of colours here that cover most of my needs. 

If I were going to add anything to these I would add a dark navy blue (Smith & Cult Kings and Thieves?), a bright coral (Essie Clambake?), a greige (Dior Palais Royal?) and a turquoise for summer toes (Leighton Denny Morning Dew?). I would also replace Chanel Vamp with the newer formula. Realistically though I most likely won't get any of these as my nail bar has a great range of colours that I can choose from.
