Funny Girl.

I'm a Nick Hornby fan and was looking forward to reading his latest Funny Girl. I'm sad to say it was rather a let down for me.

Set mostly in the 1960's it tells the story of Barbara Parker, an ex-beauty queen who becomes the star of a hugely successful TV sitcom. I was expecting the book to deal mostly with Barbara and was interested to see how Nick Hornby voiced a female protagonist as I feel his books tend to be a bit 'blokey'  but a lot of the book tells the stories of the male writers, producer and her male co star.

Nick Hornby has been writing/ adapting screen plays of late so whilst it's all very authentic I really felt that there was something lacking in this story. I didn't find the characters to be well developed at all - to the point where I found it difficult to distinguish between the male characters. There was very little to the plot - no interesting twists or turns, no flashes of humour.

All in all the story was really rather flat and boring and whilst I did finish it I wasn't really bothered  if I did or didn't, that's how little connection I felt to it and the characters. For me it was a disappointing read from a good author.
